ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, Parade, LibraryReads

What does it mean not just to survive, but to truly live?

One summer morning, twelve-year-old Edward Adler, his beloved older brother, his parents, and 183 other passengers board a flight in Newark headed for Los Angeles. Among them are a Wall Street wunderkind, a young woman coming to terms with an unexpected pregnancy, an injured veteran returning from Afghanistan, a business tycoon, and a free-spirited woman running away from her controlling husband. Halfway across the country, the plane crashes. Edward is the sole survivor.

Edward’s story captures the attention of the nation, but he struggles to find a place in a world without his family. He continues to feel that a part of himself has been left in the sky, forever tied to the plane and all of his fellow passengers. But then he makes an unexpected discovery—one that will lead him to the answers of some of life’s most profound questions: When you’ve lost everything, how do you find the strength to put one foot in front of the other? How do you learn to feel safe again? How do you find meaning in your life?

Dear Edward is at once a transcendent coming-of-age story, a multidimensional portrait of an unforgettable cast of characters, and a breathtaking illustration of all the ways a broken heart learns to love again.

Trauma porn

The narrator did a good job with the material, but the novel itself isn't what I thought it would be. Every chapter was sad and depressing. I kept waiting for it to redeem itself with a new perspective, but that was just wishful thinking. This book is pure trauma porn.

Stunning!

Oh, poor dear sweet Edward! The only survivor of a plane crash that annihilated his immediate family, Edward is a “young” and sheltered twelve-year-old. He is the sole survivor in a plane crash that killed 191 souls.

The story starts out in a hilarious manner. Edward and his family are going through airport security, and his beloved and older brother Jordan refuses to go through screening, wanting to be patted down instead. I’m not writing it with the humor it deserves.

The reader knows that the plane is going to crash. Author Ann Napolitano weaves in a suspenseful story in alternating chapters. After Jordan’s security rebellion, the chapters that contain the information that lead up to the fateful moments of crash builds tension. We learn of different passengers and their inner musings. Napolitano writes beautifully of the banality of air travel. Strangers forced to share a limited space, all with their own stories, worries, and agendas.

In the other chapters, Edward attempts to make sense of his survival. He is enlisted in his childless Aunt and Uncle’s care. He has never been close to them and feels awkward with the arrangement. Edward is grief stricken and suffers from immense survivors’ guilt. He’s become a reluctant celebrity. All this becomes too much for him His new neighbor, Shay, is an unlikely savior. Shay has no filters and doesn’t tolerate those who force filters upon her. Through Shay, Edward finds a spark of hope to get through his tragedy.

Napolitano uses “Dear” as a double entendre, as families of the doomed passengers write to Edward. This is a beautifully written story of a teenage boy thrown into catastrophe and trauma and finding his way out.

In the afterward, Napolitano tells the reader that she was inspired by two different plane crashes, one being a plane that crashed in Libya on its way to London. A nine-year-old boy was the sole survivor. That crash took out his immediate family. She tells her readers that she became interested in social media’s fascination with the boy and the crash. She also used black box information between pilots of another crash, showing how human err is so easily made.

I listened to the Audio production, narrated by Cassandra Campbell. Campbell is pitch perfect in her narration. I highly recommend the audio!

Emotional without being Sappy

This well written and performed story had my full attention. Causing me to suspend life...meaning I had no desire to put it down or leave my house.
To be honest ...I kind of dreaded reading what I thought might be a survival story (who needs to read about a plane dropping out of the sky?) I was pleasantly surprised at the gentle and well paced story about the people, their lives and relationships. The calm performance and gentleness enhances the feel good story.

Good Listen

This was a tough one for me to get into. I was somewhat bored by the first two parts. Basically I felt as if it was a poor effort at a coming-of-age effort by a very capable author. I kept (unfairly) comparing it to The Goldfinch. However, by Part 3 I was very engrossed and very well prepared by the first 2 parts to enjoy the rest of the book. I do recommend it.

A rebirth

As was described in reviews read before starting this fictional document doesn’t disappoint , u must stay with it as it will be worthwhile . Not an easy subject that could turn people away from experiencing a magnificent written & narrated account of a life spared & lived . The ancients would enjoy the application of their take on life like Seneca or Marcus Aurelius !

Simply stunning

Every now and then a novelist reads a book he wishes he'd written himself. I thought that on every single page of Dear Edward. But by the end, it was obvious to me I couldn't have.

This is so full of stunning moments I lost track. Rarely has such a young hero rung so true. And yet who among us can possibly relate to what Edward has experienced?

Maybe that's the beauty of the novel. None of us will likely ever go through anything remotely close to surviving a horrific plane crash, and yet at all feels so very familiar.

I confess I wish the crash itself had been more spread out throughout the novel rather than saved for the end, but it certainly did not keep me from pressing on.

This is the best novel I've read in years.

Beautifully crafted

This novel was beautifully crafted weaving us through present and past events piecing together the story of Eddie, Edward, and the characters who influence his survival and then his living.
