Publisher's summary

When a Hero falls, who rises up to catch them?

Once more, and against all odds, Marcus and the rest of Virtus have managed to snatch victory from the jaws of total defeat, capturing not only Carver but also destroying the orc advance completely.

Yet there is no peace in store for the exhausted victors, for not only must they pay the price for their desperate triumph, but they must also rise up once more to meet a new terror that has revealed itself.

A terror that, if left unchecked, will consume the world.

It took to long to arrive.

It's a complex story overall, but this one is too simple, so I gave it three stars for the story. We have reoccurring characters with long-running hatred of each other, old friendships that have evolved to that point where an insult in the heat of battle is a pure expression of love, and often discussed is the activities of Lazarus Cain.

We are even setting up the Hudson Hawk version of the cup of coffee. If you know you know. Else a great movie.

One mechanic of this story is respawning, but the consequence is almost nothing. The story jumps from the game to the real world.

In the real world, the game company cannot sell the pods fast enough, and millions of people are waiting to join. So why not introduce a mechanic like "Respawn, but if your character dies within one in-game week or more than X times, the player is kicked out, and another player gets the machine. " Give the player choices weight and player death means something.

However, events push the overall story forward. I would have hoped for a little less "Same bad guy." turning up and a little more WOW, this is why the world is so fascinating.

The narration by Luke Daniels, a prolific actor on Audible, continues to deliver a good performance.

Okay, but can't wait for next

Luke Daniels is amazing, as always, and he gets better with age.

So...the story. I felt a bit of disconnect at abandoning the town in this story. The heroes marched into new adventure and I missed the grounding of them building up a community. However, it all lead up to the ending, which tied a bow around various fragments of the story in other books, and things I thought may have just been discarded as the story developed now seem to have been just waiting patiently for their time. Destiny, is she an agent of good or something else? Why hadn't Molly contacted Lazarus outside of the game? Well, at the end of this book, maybe now we know. Lyrian's unique character traits evolve yet again, perhaps to allow him to handle a mysterious hidden challenge? The book as a whole isn't my favourite of the series so far, but I am looking forward to seeing the bow pulled tight on all those plot pieces, and maybe this part of the story will play much better as a bridge when we see what's on the other side.

Good Story. Hate will probably be 3 years before next.

Like the story yes the burn out is real. I'm sure the writer feels the same. That being said run up was good the beginning slow mid not too bad and the end great. But, again don't make us wait mutable years for next. Loves the books.

The story continues

Threads of Fate has certainly been long awaited. The writer isn’t the best out there but I think he did justice to the series. Lyrian Rastler’s character progression feels well thought out. His actions and chosen steps have led him to greater and greater objectives. It is nice to see a bit more of the world being developed. This book is definitely more about world building than fighting or game mechanics. A lot of the story felt kinda meh but it really picked up at the end where it felt like everything finally came together. Left off in a good place but a bit of a cliffhanger too. Overall, decently entertaining listen with some good story and character progression.

Next book when

No seriously, when you going to drop the next novel after taking your main character and shoving him on an epic quest in the middle of nowhere?!

A return to (mostly) solo play

This book cut out the out of game world and even the guild management to focus on the adventure. It worked for this book and setup the next story but I found myself missing some aspects of them.

Pacing was consistent throughout though some more levity would have been enjoyed. Add more Constantine moments. The run away spell sigils were a key highlight.

Overall the narrator and story delivered. Excited to see where the story heads.

great continuation of the series 👏 👌

I enjoy the (leveling process) of the previous books but this one took it to a whole new level... you get answers to some questions, get to explore new places and dig into the lore of the books and a lot of action...over all I would read it again and recommend it 😉

another banger

it's a very good series I really hate the trope that the author uses where every character is always super tired and sleepy it's so dumb but other than that it's a great story

Not Bad... Worth a Listen

The story drags a bit, and the narrator voices bleed together on several characters, but the plot is interesting enough to pull you through the slow spots.
