The Goodwins’ last great adventure involved finally opening the more than three hundred boxes of letters, diaries, documents, and memorabilia that Dick had saved for more than fifty years. They soon realized they had before them an unparalleled personal time capsule of the 1960s, illuminating public and private moments of a decade when individuals were powered by the conviction they could make a difference; a time, like today, marked by struggles for racial and economic justice, a time when lines were drawn and loyalties tested.

Publisher's summary
The definitive biography of the most successful female broadcaster of all time—Barbara Walters—a woman whose personal demons fueled an ambition that broke all the rules and finally gave women a permanent place on the air, written by bestselling author Susan Page.
Barbara Walters was a force from the time TV was exploding on the American scene in the 1960s to its waning dominance in a new world of competition from streaming services and social media half a century later. She was not just a groundbreaker for women (Oprah announced when she was seventeen that she wanted to be Barbara Walters), but also expanded the big TV interview and then dominated the genre. By the end of her career, she had interviewed more of the famous and infamous, from presidents to movie stars to criminals to despots, than any other journalist in history. Then at sixty-seven, past the age many female broadcasters found themselves involuntarily retired, she pioneered a new form of talk TV called The View. She is on the short list of those who have left the biggest imprints on television news and on our culture, male or female. So, who was the woman behind the legacy?
In The Rulebreaker, Susan Page conducts 150 interviews and extensive archival research to discover that Walters was driven to keep herself and her family afloat after her mercurial and famous impresario father attempted suicide. But she never lost the fear of an impending catastrophe, which is what led her to ask for things no woman had ever asked for before, to ignore the rules of misogynistic culture, to outcompete her most ferocious competitors, and to protect her complicated marriages and love life from scrutiny.
Page breaks news on every front—from the daring things Walters did to become the woman who reinvented the TV interview to the secrets she kept until her death. This is the eye-opening account of the woman who knew she had to break all the rules so she could break all the rules about what viewers deserved to know.

Story
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Story
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

Story
It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments - the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams - that contributed to the person I am today. This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival, and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed and triumphant woman I became tell her side.

Small acts of courage matter. Sometimes, they change the world. Our history books are filled with the stories of those who fought for democracy and freedom—for idealism itself—against all odds, from Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela to Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. These iconic struggles for social change illustrate the importance of engagement and activism, and offer a template for the battles we are fighting today. An insight into an icon
What a fascinating book. I’m a 2-decade fan and viewer of The View and have always respected Barbara for creating that institution, but acknowledge that I didn’t fully appreciate all that she has contributed to our world. This biography is an epic piece showcasing a long and complicated life.
The one aspect of this book that I found challenging was the awkward time jumps. In one chapter, the author would be talking about a specific topic or milestone in Barbara’s life, talk about something that happened later and may be connected to the larger story, then the next chapter we’d be talking about a potentially different time period. Aside from that it was a great read.

At times the story was hard to follow as there was much back and forth and not a clear chronological story line. The narrator was fantastic and Barbaras life was truly fascinating and heart breaking at times. I too have disabled siblings I care for and never new Barbara did as well. so I very much resonated with tears hearing her love hate relationship with her Sisterm hands down fascinating read.

An Iconic Rulebreaker!
This has been such a treat! It was made more so by author Susan Page reading the book herself.
I have watched and been a long-time Barbara Walters fan. I regret never reading anything about her life until now. I must also admit I never really watched The View. Her work on 20/20, the Barbara Walters specials, and her Oscar night coverage were the works I enjoyed. I had no idea that the way she spoke was due to a speech impediment. I remember growing up watching her and thinking she was British because she spoke so elegantly!
Part of the treat in reading- er listening to Rulebreaker was discovering the things about her life that went well beyond her phenomenal career in broadcast journalism. This woman was on a mission to succeed almost from day one and so much of that had to do with her family history.
Then there were the men! I’m talking about the man who raised her, the ones she married and dated, the ones she interviewed, AND the ones she worked with! I learned a lot I didn’t want to know about various male journalists whom I’ve always held in such high esteem. I grew up watching them and believing they were as wonderful behind the camera as they were on it- WRONG!
Barbara experienced so much negativity in so many areas of her life, yet she managed to triumph through a great deal of it marvelously. She wasn’t a saint and often played unfairly, but no one could deny her talent, her hard work, or her brilliance. She left an astounding legacy that no one will ever come close to replicating.
