Publisher's summary
From the embers of a galaxy in flames, destiny calls upon an unknown guardian.
Captain Axel Finn has spent his life running salvage missions with an alien crew and their war bot. This motley group has found refuge on his ship from their own tumultuous pasts. But little do any of them know, beneath his gentle demeanor, their steadfast captain is far from the peace following, adventure seeking giant of a man they all love. His pacifist ethos meant to safeguard them has edged them to the brink of financial ruin and drawn dangerous enemies.
Forced into a risky salvage operation, the crew uncovers an alien relic not of this galaxy.
Expecting treasure to pay their debts, they instead find an artifact of the Wrath, an extraterrestrial species that once decimated entire worlds. To decipher the true nature of their discovery, Axel seeks Rangnar Soki, a deadly bounty hunter famous for his pursuit of the Stewards—legendary warriors who stood against the Wrath in bygone days. But as the mystery of this artifact deepens, and hunters close in, an old enemy threatens to set the galaxy ablaze.
Axel must choose: accept his legacy and unleash the monster within or watch everything he loves burn.
Kick off a thrilling quest of adventure with NYT and USA Today best-selling author Nicholas Sansbury Smith in this new science-fiction saga. Listeners who enjoy galactic combat, snarky droids, ancient aliens, lost starships, and underdogs facing daunting odds, this story is for you!

My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

The crew is comprised of some of the most elite fighters in the Fleet, though occasionally overconfident and, some might say, obnoxious. When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Glory barely survived its last battle twenty years ago. Captain Drake resigned rather than face court martial. But the enemy is back, and humanity needs everything that can fly. Maybe it’s not the ship at all but the crew. They hold the key. Drake rallies old and young alike to comply with orders so secret even he wasn’t allowed to see them until after the ship left the junkyard. Would it leave? That was another question. The core hadn’t been fired in twenty years.

Story
Mia Verick's upbringing was . . . unusual. Most young women raised in the Kerrick Confederacy of Aligned Planets go to school. Mia had daily firearms practice, tactical exercises, and pilot training. She never cared about her strange life, only about living up to the expectations of her father. His mysterious job often takes him away on secret missions, leaving her to self-training until the day she can surpass him. Now she'll never get the chance.

Story
In another galaxy, far, far away from Earth, an evil Empire controls 3/4ths of the star systems and yearns for more. Those regions not under their control have either traded obedience for their sovereignty, are too wild to tame, or too dangerous for Imperial troops to tread upon. The main thorn in the Emperor's side is the Frontier, which occupies a third of the lawless and barbaric Outer Rim. Countless commanders and fleets have been sent to pacify and annex it into the Empire. All have failed.

I’m a trained cadet at the Warrior Academy on Haden. I’m female Hoganthan and full of feline ferocity. My squad and I are stretched to the limit, but will NOT. . . ever. . . opt out. So, our instructors sent us on a final test exercise - I think to get rid of us and our attitude. . . or maybe just to get rid of MY attitude. Anyway. That test turned out to be the easy part. Getting attacked again and again was a bit of a surprise, but hey, we’re warriors now. We’re used to it. That’s WHY we are at the Academy in the first place. Right? But. . . being attacked by a Cren invasion ...

NSS at his best!
This story is told really well! The character development is perfectly balanced to give you an idea of who they are and what has made them that way, without distracting from the story! This is my new favorite book! I'm on my second listen through already!

A Cosmic Saga of Heroism and Intrigue
As a long-time fan of Nicholas Sansbury Smith, "The Last Steward" does not disappoint. This initial installment in the 'Galaxy In Flames' series continues Smith’s tradition of delivering intense combat and richly drawn characters. Captain Axel Finn and his diverse crew navigate ancient cosmic mysteries and their own complex relationships, which are as intriguing as the action unfolding around them. Smith expertly weaves stories that keep you guessing right up to the final page, with his signature blend of suspense and emotional depth shining in this new series. For veterans and newcomers alike, "The Last Steward" offers an exhilarating journey through space that captivates and entertains, maintaining the high standards Smith’s fans have come to expect.

Action packed and still tugs at the heart strings
A common enemy threatening to return to a universe fractured by mistrust and a malevolent overlord, and those that are scraping out an existence only to discover a secret that could be the salvation of the entire galaxy.
Characters you’ll love some you’ll root for a fiery demise. Plenty of depth and action.
I am looking forward to the next book.

It is crazy good
OK, What I liked the most is that the characters were extremely likable.
To me, being able to root for a character is big.
I am a huge hell diver fan, and I believe this will be another series that we want to follow
Well, I didn’t care for so much? Honestly, the first few chapters threw me a little. I didn’t follow the new characters very well and had to keep rewinding and going back to get everybody sorted out, but then! It was amazing.

What a 1st installment.
As you would expect NSS does an amazing job weaving a story together and world building. This is a different side of my fav authors work. The comedy is gold. Subtile and not over the top. The interactions between the different species and characters leaves you wanting more of the story right away. It’s been hard putting the book down to do other things. But the voice acting is awesome. And by far my favorite charecter is UGA. When you read or take a listen you will understand why. Can’t wait to see where the next installment takes us.
